THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDBNTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, Chowan Acadeniy Students Take Trip (Editor’s Note: Here an IMwo accounts of a trip to Morehead Planetarium in Chapel Hill, where students } from Chowan Academy visit* ed Alan Bean, moon pilot). OUR TRIP TO SEE ALAN BEAN AND MOREHEAD . PLANETARIUM By Kathy Wright 'We started our trip on January 28, 1970, at 7 A. M. We arrived at Catmichael Auditorium at 10:30 A. M. We had to wait an hour and 45 minutes. During the time we waited we saw the Wool* en Gym Pool. There was a boy training for a swim meet. We learned that the Carmichael Auditorium had 9,000 seats for the people, twice the population of Eden* ton. At 12:03 Alan Bean started his lecture. Bean had a film : about the moon. The film showed from countdown to splashdown. The part I liked best was about the solar eclipse. * After Alan Bean’s lecture we went to the Morehead i Planetarium In the Planetarium we saw a projector. Our narra tor told us the projector was called a Zeiss projector. The i projector was made in Ger many and cost $250,000. The show at the Planetar- : ium was “Man In Space.’’ The projector showed the rocket taking off to the moon. Then it showed the . Evans & Smith CONTRACTORS Lot !•«»* Carp. The narrator told us that Ap* polo 20 was going to take a space station into space and men woula live in it for 28 days, then another space team will live in it for 138 days and then work up to a year. The reason for doing this was it takes a year to get to Mars. The narrator told us that men believed that people lived on Mars, but Mariner 4 and 5 proved them wrong. Mariner 4 and 5 took pictures of Mara The pictures showed land that was white, red, brown and green. The narrator told us that an astronaut would not be too uncomfortable because the temperature was 80 deg. F. in the daytime but 100 deg. F. at night. Theri we went outside and saw the sun dial and then went home. A TRIP TO CHAPEL HILL By John Woelard I am going to tell you about a trip that the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades of Chowan Academy took to Chapel Hill. One warm Wednesday morning the sixth, seventh and eighth grades were going to Chapel Hill to see Alan Bean speak and to see the Morehead Planetarium. As we were on our way we saw changes in the land, dif ferent kinds of highways and many Hondas. After we had gone half way we turned over to a filling station to get a drink. Soon we were on our way again. We finally arrived in Cha pel Hill. We first went to hear Alan Bean speak about his trip to the moon. He said that the people in ele mentary grades should get the grades you are going to get now and not wait until later. After he finished talk ing and showing films we went to the Morehead Plan etarium. We were shown all about the stars and space. We also went to other small places here and there. We saw some of the campus Os the University of North Caro lina. They were the Old Well, Old West, Old East and South buildings of the Uni versity and last the indoor swimming pool. The part I liked best was the Morehead Planetarium. If you ever decide to go on a field trip, try going to Cha pel Hill to see it and the University. You’ll find it quiet interesting. Housing Topic For Meeting Are you interested in build ing or remodeling a home? If you are then you should plan to attend the series of meetings to discuss different topics about housing. The first meeting will be held Monday at 7:30 P. M. in the County Office Building in Hertford. This is a joint meeting between Chowan and Perquimans counties. Per haps some of the meetings will be in Chowan if we have enough interest from Chowan residents. A housing specialist from Raleigh will attend to discuss “House Plans and 'Site Lo cations.” Other topics to be discussed will be determined !by the group. We hope to [cover many topics on hous ing that would be a concern of anyone building or remod eling. If you have already select ed a house plan, bring it with you to look at Monday. If you would like more infor mation, call Mrs. Gladys White (482-3129) or Mrs. Ila Grey White (428-7697). ON DEAN’S UST Miss Jane Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.
